From the Galilee to the Negev, protecting Israel’s most vulnerable

The Israel Magen Fund of Canada's annual campaign is dedicated to equipping Soroka, Ziv, and Mayanei Hayeshua hospitals with advanced neonatal technology tailored to their most urgent needs.

The goal is to provide this equipment to the maternity units at Soroka, Ziv, and Mayanei Hayeshua hospitals, according to each hospital’s specific needs.

This campaign is about more than just medical devices. It’s about protecting the most vulnerable lives and investing in the future of Israel. Your donation will provide state-of-the-art incubators, radiant warmers, and other critical tools, ensuring that premature and critically ill newborns receive the care they need to survive and thrive.

Support this campaign to help families, strengthen communities, and build a more secure and healthier Israel.

Why Your Support Matters

Real Stories of Giving Birth in a Critical Situation

Giving birth is one of the most profound and intimate moments in life, typically a time of joyful anticipation. However, for many mothers in Israel, this beautiful experience is being transformed by a harsh new reality: a constant feeling of instability and imminent attacks.

Imagine the emotional turmoil of bringing a new life into the world with the sound of sirens blaring, a constant reminder of the danger outside the hospital doors. This isn't momentary stress; it's a deep anxiety that elevates cortisol levels in both mothers and babies, potentially weakening their immune systems and impacting their well-being.

If you are a mother in Canada, you may have envisioned a calm and peaceful delivery. For many parents in Israel, however, the reality is very different. They must give birth in an environment where plans can change instantly, and every decision can mean life or death. They live with a surreal mix of fear and hope, resilience, and the occasional sound of sirens. Their stories reflect extraordinary strength and unwavering maternal instinct.

Recently, Israel endured the largest missile attacks in its history. In the midst of this chaos, many mothers gave birth, welcoming new life into the world even as war raged around them.

A Birth Amidst the Sirens

Serena K, a mother of four who gave birth during a weekend of missile alerts. Her delivery room wasn't a designated safe area, but the medical staff made the crucial decision to stay with her. Even after her baby was born, the stress didn't end. She, along with other new mothers, had to rush to a shelter with their newborns in their arms. Serena described the scene as "simply surreal," with a line of mothers in hospital gowns running down the hallway.

Finding Peace in a Shelter

Natalie S, a single mother, chose to call an ambulance just to get to the hospital safely, fearing she'd be caught by a missile alert on the road. The delivery room she found wasn't a chaotic, emergency space, but a makeshift one in an air-raid shelter. Despite the unsettling setting, she found comfort in the staff's calm professionalism. Reflecting on her experience, Natalie put it simply: "I stayed with people who could help me".

Keeping Newborns Safe in The Negev

These advanced warmers create a stable, life-saving environment for fragile newborns, giving them the warmth and safety they need from their very first moments.

Located in the Negev, Soroka is the primary hospital for a strategic area covering 60% of Israel's territory and serving over a million residents. Since October 7, 2023, the hospital has treated more than 4,300 injured civilians and soldiers, often under direct threat.

On June 19, a missile from Iran struck Soroka Medical Center’s Northern Surgical Building, destroying its top floor and causing major damage across the campus. Two more buildings were evacuated, leaving 562 of 1,191 beds unusable — a severe loss for the Negev’s main hospital. Some displaced services are now being gradually restored.

About Soroka Medical Center

Read more about the attack on Soroka Medical Center

The Soroka Neonatal Department is the busiest in the country, with over 17,000 births annually, and more than 15% of newborns requiring intensive care. The current facilities, built in the 1980s, are outdated and overcrowded, often forcing families to transfer fragile babies elsewhere. To address this urgent need, Soroka is constructing a new Neonatal Care Centre that will cater to all newborns in the Negev. Fully protected against missile attacks and built to IDF Home Front Command standards, the new centre will ensure world-class, life-saving care even in times of war.

It is a Level-1 trauma centre with 403 beds, seven surgical units, and an average of about 300 infants and young children treated in the NICU each year, along with approximately 2,000 births annually.

During recent conflicts, Ziv successfully relocated its emergency and critical care services to protected areas while continuing to provide care for mothers and infants under fire. Its infrastructure and staff were fully mobilized to handle mass casualties, while management and medical teams carefully assessed resources to provide the best possible care for the injured.
