In a remarkable demonstration of international collaboration and generosity, the Israel Magen Fund of Canada (IMFoC), in collaboration with the Society of Friends of Ziv Medical Center, a non-profit established in 1964, has taken a significant step in advancing healthcare in northern Israel. This project, rooted in IMFoC's core mission to promote physical and mental well-being, exemplifies how modern medical technology, community support, and cross-border cooperation can dramatically improve — and even save — lives.
At the heart of this initiative is the acquisition of Ziv Medical Center's first state-of-the-art surgical ultrasound machine, the BkActiv Ultrasound System. Located in the city of Tsfat, Ziv Medical Center plays a critical role as a frontline hospital serving civilians and soldiers, including those wounded during recent conflicts. By upgrading its imaging capabilities with this advanced device, Ziv has elevated its diagnostic and surgical precision to a whole new level, marking a significant milestone in patient care.
Medical imaging is no longer just a diagnostic tool — it's an essential part of treatment planning and real-time surgical decision-making. The BkActiv Surgical Ultrasound System represents the pinnacle of such technology. Designed for hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures, this device enables healthcare professionals to detect tumours as small as 2 mm, guide surgical resections with pinpoint accuracy, and visualize complex anatomical structures in real time.
This level of precision directly translates into better outcomes for patients. Surgeons can now:
Detect additional hepatic lesions missed by preoperative imaging (up to 25% more).
Change surgical plans on the fly based on intraoperative findings — improving effectiveness in up to 49% of hepatic and 30% of pancreatic surgeries.
Reduce complications and recovery time through minimally invasive, image-guided procedures.
In a region like northern Israel, where access to specialized care is limited and time is often of the essence, this kind of innovation can literally mean the difference between life and death.
Mobilizing Compassion into Impact
This achievement would not have been possible without the support of IMFoC's community of donors in Canada. Through generous contributions, IMFoC was able to fund the total amount of $450,000 required to acquire the BkActiv system. More than just financial support, this was a shared mission — a clear expression of solidarity with the people of Israel during a time of great need.
"What makes this project especially meaningful is how deeply it aligns with our core mission at IMFoC — saving lives and promoting well-being. Every dollar raised isn't just a donation; it's an investment in hope, health, and humanity. Through strategic partnerships and careful oversight, we make sure that generosity translates directly into impact." — Lenny Rothschild, Vice President, Israel Magen Fund of Canada.
Working hand-in-hand with the Society of Friends of Ziv Medical Center, IMFoC ensured that the equipment provided was not only top-of-the-line but also aligned with the hospital's most urgent needs. Ziv's staff, renowned for their professionalism and dedication, now have at their fingertips the tools they need to deliver cutting-edge care in critical situations — from trauma surgeries to cancer interventions.
Healthcare is one of the most profound ways we can impact lives. Through these projects, the Israel Magen Fund of Canada is not only providing equipment but also providing dignity, comfort, and a fighting chance for thousands of patients in need.
