They Show Up First — ZAKA Search and Rescue Volunteers

There are moments in history that no one should ever have to witness. And yet, on October 7 and in the days that followed, ZAKA Search and Rescue volunteers were among the first to arrive.

They stepped into devastation, where every second meant choosing between saving the living and honouring the fallen. They worked through the night, in silence and in shock, ensuring that no one was left behind.

This is not ordinary work. It is sacred.

In Judaism, we honour both life and death with the same dignity, and ZAKA volunteers carry that responsibility under the most unimaginable conditions.

Even today, many continue to operate in active conflict zones, often without adequate protection. More than 500 volunteers still lack essential protective gear. At the same time, they carry the invisible weight of trauma, returning again and again to scenes most of us could never bear.

And still, they show up.

Behind the scenes, resilience programs and mental health support are helping them cope, but the need is urgent. Equipment is limited. Resources are stretched. And the mission continues, every single day.

Now, it is our turn to show up for them.

The Israel Magen Fund of Canada is the official Canadian partner of ZAKA Search and Rescue, and it is proud to stand alongside these heroes, supporting both their life-saving operations and their long-term resilience.

Through initiatives such as the Israel Rehabilitation & Resilience Fund (IRRF), IMFoC is committed to supporting the mental health and long-term resilience of ZAKA volunteers, ensuring that those who carry this burden are not left to face it alone.

About ZAKA Search & Rescue

Founded in 1995, ZAKA is Israel's leading non-governmental rescue and recovery organization.

With a 5,000-strong volunteer force, it responds to crises 24/7, embodying resilience, compassion, and selflessness. Whether in the aftermath of terror attacks or natural disasters, ZAKA's mission—"To save those who can be saved and honour what remains"—is more than a motto; it is its sacred commitment.

Their volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and are united by a shared purpose. Their expertise spans specialized units—from K9 teams to jet-ski responders—ensuring rapid, professional action across all terrains. However, what truly defines ZAKA is the spirit of volunteerism, which bridges societal divides and showcases the power of unity.
